Taking the plunge

As I mentioned on Monday, a key element of my entryway update involves taking the plunge…into the scary world of gallery walls.

Really, there are so many scary things about gallery walls.  Will I space things too close or too far apart?  Will I choose the wrong frames?  Will the end result meet my way-too-high expectations?  Will my husband ask, “What is a gallery wall?” once I’ve gotten too far in to stop?

The answer to all of those questions is probably yes, but I went for it anyway.  Why?  Because all of my inspiration photos just couldn’t be wrong.  Right?

So, instead of stressing about pulling together all the right pieces, I just went frame crazy.  I dug unused frames out of our closet, then raided Goodwill (I think I spent less than $25 for about 15 frames!).  I ignored what was currently in the frames and got busy laying out just one wall (there are four small sections of wall space above our new entryway coat racks that will eventually be covered!).

That clock that is featured front and center is my inspiration for the whole gallery wall.  It is actually a tide clock with a map of the island in Maine where we live.  It was a wedding gift from my sister and brother-in-law.  I love it and I’ve been trying to find the perfect spot for it in our home for years, but the clock has two things that are rarely found in our house…a natural wood colored frame and a coastal theme!  Seriously, every other frame in our house is black or silver, and I’ve tried to keep our house from screaming Maine…but not anymore.  The entryway is going to represent warm wood tones and a coastal Maine feel on behalf of the rest of the house.  I’m excited to mix it up a bit.

Anyway, once I laid my one wall of frames on a  piece of brown paper the same size as the wall space, and measured and marked where each nail would go, I taped the paper to the wall, hammered away, and then pulled the paper off.  Thankfully I had snapped a picture first because I was having a hard time remembering what went where!

I am going to pick something to go in the empty upper left corner, but it’s okay for now.

I was feeling so energized by my progress that I attempted wall 2 after Ike went to bed.  I used the same measuring and placing method, and ended up with this:

Remember, the artwork is not final…it will all be replaced!  And ignore the 9 p.m. lighting…it doesn’t do anything for the hideous Goodwill artwork.  This whole hot mess will look SO different once the frames are filled with the right things.  I promise.

Can I make a confession?  I put these pictures in Polaroid format with captions just in case someone pins them on Pinterest.  I don’t want anyone to think this is my final result (gasp!).  Isn’t it funny how Pinterst has changed how bloggers think!?

So, this is where my gallery wall stands.  Chris is totally skeptical and I am still scared.  But I am encouraged.  Hopefully next weekend I can finish the other two walls, and then I can focus on pulling together all the various art to go in the frames.  But let’s be real…they may stay empty for a few months!

If you’re interested in my inspiration photos, just check out my entryway board on Pinterest.

And feel free to add in your two cents on this whole thing.  Please.  I need gallery wall therapy.

I think you’ve done a wonderful job. Love all that you’ve put up and the locations chosen. I’m very scared of gallery walls, but you’ve made it look so easy with how you’ve tackled the task. I can’t wait to see the finished results! Love the clock too. Great gift.

Thanks, Tiffany. I’m glad I’m not the only one scared by gallery walls!!

I really like what you have done. My only concern is how well the balls are tacked up there. In my house, I would have visions of hitting them and knocking them off as the hooks below them were used. I like them on the wall, but wonder if something flatter along the bottom would be more functional.

Thanks, Rhey! The balls are actually quite secure, and although the picture doesn’t show it well, they really don’t interfere with the hooks at all!

Erin- I LOVE your gallery wall. As you know by my Pinterest, I’m planning my own. Thanks for sharing yours! You’ve inspired me to make a trip to my local Goodwill to source some inexpensive frames. I love how you’ve really made it eclectic incorporating found objects as well. Where did you find such a big lettter “F”? All the ones that I find are so small and wimpy. And I’m sure this is no surprise, but I can’t get enough of your tide clock. I think it is perfect (and wish I had one too!)- what a great gift from your sister! My mom has a great tide clock from Island Artisans, and every time I see it, I want to steal it. I’m strongly considering incorporating maps into my own gallery wall and will be sure to include a map of MDI when I do.

I’m looking forward to seeing everything in non-Polaroid version when it is complete!

Hi Jessica! I repinned so many of your gallery wall pictures…thank you for helping me with inspiration! Goodwill is definitely the place to go. That is also where I found the wooden bowls (and there are more wooden bowls to come on the other side). The big letter “F” was something I actually found at Kohl’s about two years ago on super clearance. It’s just been hiding in the closet until now!

Wow! I really like it! I think the eclectic mix of frames and tchochkes (sp?) looks really unique. I’d spend a few minutes there after taking my coat off!

Like the layout so far. Isn’t choosing what goes inside the frames the hardest part?! I’m still stuck with mine. Hoping to find some cool local stuff from the upcoming Baltimore Craft Show, but that’s a whole month away. There also a few prints I found on ETSY that I really like…but I’m dragging my feet.

This is looking SO GOOD. I am always amazed by how everyone makes their own gallery wall their own. So cool!

Love it so far! You did a great job whipping that up! And the Polaroid idea is brilliant too. I am going to have to steal that one as way too often I cringe when I see “before” or “during” pics pinned. Ouch!

Totally pinned your first pic just now because the process of using the brown paper to get the layout right on the actual wall is genius and I’d like to remember that when it comes time for me to do one of these monsters. Thanks for the tip!

And…..I-really-hate-to-say-this-but-just-imagine-it-in-a-Tim-Gunn-type-voice-because-maybe-that-will-make-it-better-but-what-do-I-know-about-all-of-this-anyway…..maybe, just maybe, you need to edit your two walls, just a bit? It looks good, but honestly, to me, it looks just a bit cluttered. And maybe that’s the whole point of gallery walls, and I like that you’ve interspersed knick-knacky things with the frames, but it just seems like it’s too much. Maybe it would be better if you started your topmost hangings further from the ceiling, allowing more of the wall to show through, though that’s not what your Pinterest board shows. Then again, maybe I’ll think differently once you’ve filled everything with the artwork you want to display (in which case you can completely disregard this whole paragraph), but I wanted to share my first-glance, honest opinion.

    Please don’t hate me.

I like it. And I agree w/ Laura — the amalgamation of items adds to the beauty of the display. Thinking I should get off my duff and do my own. :)

I LOVE it!!! I’m interested in that ruler- I feel like there must be a story there? I really want to do a gallery wall too and I think I’ve got the spot picked out….now I guess need to get the guts. Oh and find stuff to hang.

    Erin Reply:

I say don’t worry about having things to hang! Just get some frames, hang them, and fill them later!

Oh, and no story behind the ruler, really! Just an old one I found somewhere!

I love this! I’m totally impressed by how your gallery wall is turning out. Ii think you’ve spaced things in a very pleasing way. I’ve been wanting to do one for over a year now, but am just too intimidated. Maybe this will give me the courage!
