Numero uno
At this time one year ago I was in labor. And on this night one year ago I delivered our sweet baby Ike. It has been the best, craziest, exhausting, heart-warming year, and we can hardly believe that our wrinkly little newborn is now a laughing, clapping and standing one-year-old who says “hi” whenever he wants our attention.
To commemorate the special day, I desired nothing more than an old fashioned cake smash photo shoot. Allow me to set the stage…
We had one sweet baby ready to get frosted…
And we had one cake ready to get smashed…
Baby, meet cake. Cake, meet baby.
After many attempts at getting him to touch the cake, eat the frosting, anything…he snags the candle.
And then he takes off…
I regained my cake composure and tried again later in the day in a normal dining setting…
“Really, Mom? You’re trying this again?”
I gave in and ate the slice that was on his tray.
“I’ll just have cheese, please, Mom.”
Next time I’ll make cheesecake.
Happy birthday, Ike!

Happy happy birthday, sweet Ike! Congrats to you and Chris, Erin, for surviving the first year, and with flying colors no less. Someone who came to Riley’s first birthday party brought my husband and I a present of our own: a bottle of champagne. Needless to say, we much appreciated it! And don’t worry that Ike didn’t like his cake; I bet he was LOADS easier to clean up than Riley was. Goodness, what a mess that was.

Thanks, Courtney! That bottle of champagne does sound good. And I love that Riley was such a mess with his cake…totally jealous!

Oh wow, happy birthday you precious boy you! Aw man, what a cutie. I think Ike and Gabe are meant to be buddies. Gabe chose a cup of ice cubes over cake. Congrats Erin, you’ve gone and raised an adorable little dude!

That is so funny about him being not interested in the cake
It is amazing to me that you just survived the first year of motherhood, while working AND you find time to blog too! I guess that should motivate me to at least go fold my laundry

Honestly, I can’t believe my kid doesn’t like cake. Cake liking should definitely be in his genes!

Happy Birthday Ike! I’ve been reading your blog pretty regularly for a few months now and didn’t realize until now that our boys were one day apart! Ethan’s first birthday is tomorrow. I can’t wait. And I’m going to panic too if he doesn’t smash some cake on his face.

Aw, happy birthday, Ike!! What a nice little cake your mommy made for you. If I lived closer I would have helped you eat that yummy cake and there would have been none left. I hope you got lots of birthday hugs and presents! The first year is fun, but once you start running around you’ll really have a blast and we can play together (maybe next summer if my mommy is willing to make that long drive again with crazy me in the back seat).
Your buddy,
DK

Green socks for the win. Really. Happy first birthday to you, too! I totally believe that first birthday party is just as much a celebration for the parents (for surviving)!
