12 Days of Christmas: Felt ornaments
There are only 17 more days until Christmas and I am going to fill 12 of them with some holiday cheer. Don’t ask me how I will come up with 12 separate Christmas posts…but I think I can manage somehow!
Up for today is my take on some felt ornaments. I posted some inspiration last week and then got busy this past weekend.
Here’s what I used to get started:
- Two snowflake/star cookie cutters
- Felted wool in white and gray
- Embroidery floss in gold
- A small amount of stuffing (that I stole from a living room pillow, no lie)
- Scissors and a needle
First I traced my cookie cutters (two of the white snowflakes and one gray star for each ornament)
Then I cut them out. If I was really smart, I would have used a disappearing fabric marker to trace the shapes. I actually have one of those but it is lost somewhere. So the blue ink stayed. It’s festive, right?
Next I made a snowflake out of one of the white pieces on each ornament by folding a white piece in half, then half again (just like I did in third grade when I made paper snowflakes).
Focus on the felt and not my ginormous looking thumb. It must have been the angle. Now I’ll never be a hand model.
And why do I bring up third grade snowflake making? Because my sweet husband told me my ornaments looked like a third grader made them. Thankyouverymuch.
Anyway, the next step was to layer the pieces with the gray in between the two white pieces.
Then I added a small amount of stuffing behind the gray layer to add a little dimension (but you could also omit the stuffing if you don’t have living room pillows to steal from).
And then I stitched around to make a pretty design with the embroidery floss to keep all the stuffing in…
I actually made six different snowflakes, but this was the only picture that didn’t come out blurry (what makes Christmas tree photos so hard, anyway?).
And, can I just tell you how handy non-breakable ornaments are when you have mischievous little babies in your house like this one?
How about you? Do you think my ornaments look third-grade-ish? Or do you have kiddos that want to steal ornaments? Spill it all.

If I made these, they’d look like a third grader made them, too. I am NOT good at snowflakes! Lol.

Very cute Erin! And I for one think they look great.
They’d even be cute tied to a gift or some wrapped-up holiday treats.
Looking forward to your holiday cheer!

I like them. The bottom half of my tree is also non-breakable ornaments. My little one is 3 and while she is better about the ornaments I thought it would be a good idea to be safe. I left off the glass ones and just stuck to my rather extensive Hallmark ornament collection for the top half. I let her decorate the bottom half with the fabric and metal ornaments because she was so excited to have our tree up.

I think they are so cute. And not like a 3rd-grader’s handwork at all. Unless said 3rd grader is a genius. In which case…
