Tasty Tuesday: Apple Dutch Cake
After graduating college, my friend Jodi was one of the first people I knew (other than my family members) who loved to cook and bake. While I was living in my little apartment eating a turkey burger for dinner, I was always in awe of Jodi who would come home after work and the gym and cook up a fantastic meal. I’ve learned several recipes from her, including this one for a delicious Apple Dutch Cake.
We went apple picking recently, so a quiet fall afternoon was the perfect time to whip up this take on an apple spice cake. It smells soooo good while baking!
Here is the rundown…
Apple Dutch Cake
BATTER INGREDIENTS:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 TBSP baking powder
- 1.25 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp allspice
- 1.25 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 cup (8 oz) lemon OR vanilla yogurt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup of diced apples (at least)
TOPPING INGREDIENTS:
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 3 TBSP flour
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 2 TBSP softened butter
INSTRUCTIONS:
Your first step is to mix up all of the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ingredients in another. Thanks to the yogurt, your wet ingredients will resemble vanilla pudding. Then combine the two:
Cut up at least 1 cup of apples. I tend to think that the more apples the better, so I went with an extra half cup of apples.
Stir in your apples. As you can see, the mixture will be pretty thick looking…
You can then transfer your batter into a greased 9-inch square pan. I didn’t have a square pan, so I went with a 9-inch cake pan…which was not big enough. My cake overflowed while baking! Go with a square pan, if you can.
Next, prepare the topping by mixing together all of the topping ingredients.
Sprinkle on the topping and then bake at 350 for 45 minutes!
This cake definitely makes it feel (and smell) like fall, so if you have some fresh apples on hand, you should go for it. The yogurt gives the cake such a good texture and if you use lemon yogurt it adds such a nice flavor. That’s probably more nice things about yogurt in one sentence than I’ve said my whole life!
Have you made any classic fall recipes?

That looks sooo yummy! I’ll have to try it.

I just tried out this recipe tonight and it is delicious! The cake was the perfect dessert to share with our friends who came over for dinner. Thanks for sharing Erin! I have tons of apples and I have already made apple crisp several times this fall so I was looking for something different to make. I’ll definitely make this again
