Gotta getta gutter
I always thought gutters were just for aesthetics and for preventing water from dripping on my head. I never thought in all my little homeownership life that gutters might actually have an impact on the structure of our house.
Sure, I noticed that water dripping off the roof was wearing the paint off of our deck…
But we had no idea it was the water from the roof that was causing the rotting trim around our doors…
Yikes. And as you can also see above, the grey paint that was once on the deck is practically no longer.
Luckily our good contractor friend clued us in to the fact that we really need gutters to protect the wood trim on our house and to move water away from the house in general. Ingenious, I tell you.
So, as the spring rolled around we decided gutters were a priority project. Before we repainted the deck or fixed our door frames, we wanted to be rid of the water.
We decided gutters probably weren’t a good DIY project for us, so we went pro. I was a little nervous when I learned that we had hired a company whose slogan is “You need her, we gutter,” but in a short few hours, we had indeed “gutter.”
Beautiful, seamless, nearly-one-thousand-dollar gutters… Yes, when I heard the price I kind of choked, but it was a long term investment, right? And they actually look really good. We had rain this weekend to put them to the test and they worked perfectly!
So, that’s how we learned the hard way about the importance of gutters. Is this news to you, as well, or are you all gutter-savvy?

oooh! Pretty new gutters! I’m a little jealous… ours are all old, misaligned, and full of leaves (despite having gutter guards). Enjoy them!

Well done you! We were climbing around our roof the other day to get to the crawl space (no stairs!) and looked down into the gutters which are warped and full of stagnant water. I guess perhaps there’s one benefit to “it never rains in Colorado”?
I love that slogan. Somehow it seems so Maine. My favorite in Denver is a countertop place called “Your Wish is Granite”

The man team installed gutters when we (we being the man team) redid the roof. The soffits were really the best part, it was nice to not have birds living in our soffits anymore.
They look really nice, and it was definitely an investment, and a good one.

I had no idea just how important gutters are to the home. I think you made a wise investment, can’t wait to see what you do with the deck now!

The gutters on the townhouse adjacent to ours desperately need to be cleaned, because the rain has worn away the stain along that side of our deck – and we just stained it last fall!! Argh.
