Junk Drawer Challenge & Giveaway
**This giveaway is now closed and no longer accepting entries. The winner will be selected and announced on Wednesday morning, March 24.**
Thanks to the generosity of the Rubbermaid blog, I recently scored myself a set of junk drawer organizers. And the good news is that I also scored a set for one of you lucky readers!
When I read Rubbermaid’s challenge to organize my junk drawer I had to laugh. Didn’t they know that I have three junk drawers? (Yes, I said three.) Is that weird? Do most people really only have one junk drawer?
You see, I have the standard one in the kitchen…
But our charging station and entry way table drawers really catch a lot of crap, too…
So, using the handy tip sheet provided by Rubbermaid, I set out to organize my junk drawers using the following easy steps:
- I set aside one hour (it actually took less) to tackle the drawers.
- I emptied out all of the contents and divided them into piles: keep in the drawer, toss, store elsewhere and donate.
- I put the drawer organizers together like a puzzle within the drawers.
- Of the keep pile, I organized items into like piles and put them away in the junk drawer accordingly.
One thing I liked about Rubbermaid’s tip sheet is that it emphasized the need and practicality for a junk drawer. Junk drawers are a necessity, but they don’t always have to have this much stuff…
In less than an hour I had my drawers all organized. And I felt better because all of those random batteries, screws and office supplies got put away in the other places that we have designated for such items. All that was left in the drawers was, well, junk that we need there!
I really liked the drawer organizers because they interlock and have gripping feet, so they don’t slide around when I open the drawer like my previous bins and baskets did.
Here are the revamped drawers:
And yes, we do need pens in all three drawers. Pens are like gold, right!? So are those sentimental birthday and anniversary cards that we save close at hand in case we ever need reminders about why we are married…
As an added bonus, I got to rediscover my old driver’s license and college ID. Funny looking, huh?
Anyway, you are probably wondering what happened to the giveaway post. Don’t worry, here it is.
What you’ll win: One lucky reader will receive a six-piece junk drawer organizer set from the kind folks at Rubbermaid.
Who’s eligible: Anyone in the U.S. or Canada.
How to Play: Leave a comment on this post that includes the phrase “JUNK DRAWER JUNKIE” and tell me how many junk drawers you have.
Entries for the giveaway will be accepted through 8 p.m. EST on Tuesday, March 23. A winner will be selected randomly (using random.org) and the winner will be announced on Wednesday morning, March 24.
Disclaimer time: Although the folks at Rubbermaid were kind enough to send me a free set of drawer organizers, they did not require me to write this post, giveaway their product or say nice things. The review was optional. And I meant every word that I said!
Thanks for organizing with me!

I am a junk drawer junkie! We just bought our house, and it seems that we have junk drawers all over the place! I have a tray/charging station right when you walk in the door, and that always seems to catch junk, then one in our home office, and another in the kitchen! Speaking of which… all need to be organized!

Junk drawer junkie! Technically we have two junk drawers, one of which I organized back in January (http://journeychic.com/2010/01/06/make-life-easier-drawer-organizers/). That leaves another one in the kitchen, and if I’m being honest (said in Simon Cowell’s accent), I also have a junk drawer in the secretary desk that’s in our living room, and a junk basket in our pantry. Oh, and there’s a shoebox of random stuff left over from my hubby’s old junk drawer from before we moved in together.
So yeah. Lots of junk.

I’m a junk drawer junkie…well sort of. I just have one big one, but it’s a NIGHTMARE and I’d love to get it whipped into shape. Thanks for the giveaway!

I love how you converted your junk drawers to organized drawers. I, too, am a junk drawer junkie. I have the requisite one in the kitchen (and I NEVER know where to put those BIC candle lighters–thanks for the inspiration), my desk drawer, and a plastic bin in the bathroom that holds all sorts of things. All receptacles/drawers require pushing things aside to find things.
Even if I don’t win, your post serves as the impetus to get my junk drawers into shape.

I currently have…3 junk drawers and I’m a bit afraid to tackle them. But you make it look so do-able and rewarding with the help of these fabulous organizers!

You’re talking to a Junk Drawer Junkie right here. I have one in the kitchen (oddly enough about the same size as yours, why is that funny shaped drawer in every kitchen?!), and a junkie table/charging station that drives me bonkers. I could definitely use an overhaul!

I am a Junk Drawer Junkie that has taken it to new heights by now breeding Junk Cabinets. I have 1 cabinet by the front door, 1 cabinet in the dining room, 1 drawer in the kitchen and 1 drawer in the bathroom. I think I need help.

I am a Junk Drawer Junkie! We have 3 junk drawers in the kitchen, 1 in each bedroom and 1 in each desk. Winning this would go a long way in helping to get us organized.

JUNK DRAWER JUNKIE! Unfortunately, I have 2 junk drawers in the kitchen, 1 in the bedroom, 2 in the guest bedroom, and 1 in the laundry room. Hmmm..something might need to be done.

I’m a JUNK DRAWER JUNKIE… we have one in the kitchen, two in the garage the sad part is the ones in the garage are not just full of “belongs in the garage” stuff. Maybe if I win a set it will make me want to buy two more so I can organize ALL the junk drawers!

Junk drawer junkie here! We have three junk drawers which I have attempted to organize but somehow they never really stay that way. I love all those tips and you did a great job!

JUNK DRAWER JUNKIE! I have two junk drawers in my kitchen, but many junk “areas” throughout my house that can use some organizing. Let’s just say, the guest room closet has seen better days.

Oh Erin! This one made me laugh!!! I liked your charging station and felt like I needed one after we left your house! Well, turns out I just landed one from my mom recently! Ours is in our kitchen in the back of the house…so it hasn’t caught too much junk yet! But I forced Chris to put his phone chargers back there as opposed to the table when you first walk in our door! As for junk drawers…I am afraid (and Chris will agree) that I am definitely a JUNK DRAWER JUNKIE! In fact, I think it has spilled beyone my drawers…it’s sad! So I have my menu drawer in the kitchen…with one other junk drawer in the kitchen. I would say you could probably find a drunk drawer in my office and in my nighttable! My junk has also spilled over onto my recently purchased baker’s rack! Oh…but I am trying ever so hard to get mine and the roommate’s things fused and organized!

Junk Drawer Junkie here – though as a child I was determined NOT to be one, after having to clean out and organize my mothers repeatedly. But somehow it cannot be helped. My utensil drawer is turning into a junk drawer b/c its the only top drawer in my kitchen and apparently has a little to much room around the utensil tray to store all those “things”!!
And of course there is the desk, and the office desk and even the bathroom type “junk”. I love organizing by the way. So fulfilling:)

Well, technically I have 4 junk drawers. As I sit here and type this I can think of other spots that could be considered “junk drawers.” Maybe I just shouldn’t think about too much!
Very soon they will all be cleaned out, we are moving in 8 weeks. The thought is overwhelming!

I am a junk drawer junkie. I have two right now. When ever one gets too crazy I “clean” it out and move stuff to a new location. I should use the little cubbies
for organizing.

Aren’t we all junk drawer junkies? I have 3 junk drawers in the kitchen alone. I ran out of room in my bedroom, so my daughter has a junk drawer in her dresser that is an odd combo of things. How horrible is that?!?!
