The Goodwill Bench Saga Continues
I know, when will I finish this bench already!? It has been in my possession for two full weeks! I assure you that progress is being made, slowly but surely. I finally got all of the staples and nails out from the previous fabric covering and I swear there are more holes than stars in the sky.
I also hunted for the perfect fabric to re-cover the bench and I found everything I needed at Marden’s, a local bargain store (it’s a Maine legend, for those of you who don’t live here!). I found a nice silk print that I will use to cover the cushion. I also picked up a piece of the blue silk to use as an accent.
I couldn’t find the perfect fabric to use for the skirt that I will make (to cover up all of those dang holes) and I was about to give up. That is when I found the perfect solution in the sheet section (you have to be resourceful, people!). I picked up a beige sheet set for $7.49 and it will work perfectly. All together I spent $14 on the fabric.
Now I just need to pull it all together!
What do you think of my fabric choices? Have you ever used a sheet in lieu of fabric for a project? Can you believe I just typed “in lieu?”
If you haven’t been following this drawn-out saga, you can check out the first posts here and here .

I think the fabric is lovely Erin and yes I’ve used sheeting before. I actually had curtains made from heavy cream sheeting with a border round the edges of pale yellow – sounds horrible but they were lovely. I also had them lined with heavy duty black-out lining and they were, really they were, the bees knees and everyone commented on them and couldn’t believe it was sheeting. Go for it.

Hi Janis,
Sounds like your curtains were very creative! I’m even more enthused about my sheet usage now!

That fabric is gorgeous! FINISH IT! hahaha Speaking of using sheets, I just did this weekend. I wanted a tie-dyed tablecloth for my husband’s birthday party but the hippie store at the mall wanted like $60 for them. So off to Goodwill for a $2 white sheet I went. It worked perfectly.

I love your fabric choices, I can’t wait to see the final product. I’ve been inspired by your goodwill find and attempted to go to one near my house today. After circling around for 45 minutes, I’ve decided it must have moved and they haven’t updated the website yet.

Hi Kristen,
Thanks so much! I can’t believe Goodwill would move like that and not tell you!
