Adventures in stud finding

I know I’m already married and all, but I was super psyched to score a stud finder for Christmas.  Especially since it includes a laser level.  Hot.  And I put it to good use this weekend.

You see, we’ve had this mirror leaning against the master bathroom wall since September when we stole it for a mere $25 at Lowe’s (originally $98!).  It doesn’t look that bad, but dog hair and dust collects behind it like you would never believe.  We wanted it up and off the floor.

Using my stud finder (I laugh every time I type that), I found where my studs were and where they were not.  I measured and marked where my first hook would hang and then…I lasered it.

I followed the line and marked 27″ over to the right and I was good to go.  A few hammer swings and lifting assistance from Chris and the mirror was up, and level no less!

The stud finder part of this was really handy.  The laser part was great, but if you are doing this by yourself, it actually takes a bit of coordinating to measure and laser at the same time.  I could see how the laser would be a snap if you had one person holding and the other measuring/marking.  Overall, I loved every minute of using it and I highly recommend snagging yourself a stud-finding-laser-leveling machine!

What do you think?  Would you prefer to just use the measure method with an old-school level?  Are the studs in your wall predictable, or would a stud finder help you?  I don’t know about you, but our studs are never that standard 16″ apart.  Having the stud finder sure beats the trial and error method!

P.S. Want to get your own stud finder and laser level?  Good news, you can find it in my Amazon store!

    Erin,

I actually would love something like that. We just the old fashioned method just now but I may treat myself one of these days.

Have sent you the photograph of the fridge to your email address.

Janis, you should definitely treat yourself!!

Jen, I know, isn’t the price amazing? To make it even better, I saw the mirror when it was on sale for $50, planned to buy it over the weekend (since they had such a large stock) and when I went back it was $25. What is really weird is that they now have this exact same mirror back in stock and at full price. Oh, and I’m glad I’m not the only one with the weird stud finder sense of humor!

    Okay -

    1. Thank you so much for your sweet sweet comment on my blog yesterday. Sorry to hear that you have gone through that, but thank you for the support.

    2. $25!?!?! That is ridiculous. I’ve been looking for a huge mirror like that (for cheap) and I think $80 is the cheapest I’ve seen! Amazing find.

    3. Everytime we break out the stud finder, jokes and giggles ensue. My husband likes to hold it up to himself and say, “found one!”

  3. I’m dying to get myself a laser level/stud finder. What a pair :) I could have really used one when I was hanging 4 IKEA shelves and the wall looks like my 1st grade math test with eraser marks all over the place…

    Hi Kristen,

I hear you…I’ve been there with a million pencil marks wondering which one was my original starting point!
