Subtle Stocking

After only 3 years in our house, I feel like our Christmas decoration collection is tiny.  Thanks to post-Christmas sales, we’ve added more each year, but really our pickings are a little slim.

I’ve learned that starting a collection from the beginning has its benefits.  Each year I’ve learned more about our style and fine tuned the type of decorations I pick out.  And each year, I find myself leaning towards a subtle Christmas with more silver, white and green and less red and bright colors (except for the strand of colored lights on our staircase that I put up just for Chris.  He really loves colored lights).

So, when it came to this week’s Dare to DIY Challenge to make something new to deck our halls, I knew just what I wanted to make.  So far the stockings that we have really scream Christmas, so I wanted to make a new more subtle stocking with a bit more style.  And here it is!

My in-process photos did not come out very clear (layers of fabric aren’t so easy to photograph!), but I used a simple pattern that I purchased years ago.  I picked out non-Christmas fabric with neutral colors and small pops of red.

If you’re like me and have basic sewing skills (you might remember how I bragged about being able to sew in a straight line), then you could easily follow a pattern.  Or, even better, take apart a stocking you already have to see how it is made, and use that as a pattern!

Now my new stocking is keeping my less-is-more entryway Christmas tree company (we cut it down from a crowded patch of pines in our back yard.)  It got the red ornament treatment seeing how I was keeping red off our main tree.  Charming, isn’t it?

The projects in the first few weeks of the DIY Challenge have floored me, so you should pop on over to Newly Woodwards to check out all of the other projects!

ERIN! You are so awesome. I love love love this stocking and I’m in love with your little tree from your backyard. Adorable.

I often think I can sew, but I honestly have some trouble sewing a straight line sometimes. =) Seriously. =)

Thanks for joining in this week. It’s been so fun seeing all your projects through the last five weeks. You are super crafty and clever and I’m so happy we “met.”

  3. Your stocking is so cute! I love that you made them yourself. Definitely something I want to attempt (maybe next year). My Christmas decor is small but grows a little each year with the after sales too!

Erin………really, really pretty. Unfortunately I don’t bother with a colour scheme – if I see something I like I just buy it (if I can afford it) hence I have two Xmas stockings that are red and gold and one large purple one to stuff the cats toys into.

Erin! I LOVE the ruffles on this! So pretty! (Am just catching up on this week’s blog posts – yikes.)

I kind of wish I had thought of ruffles before making my stockings… Maybe next year?
