May 10, 2004
I knew that May 10, 2004, was an important day. After all, it was the first day at my first real, professional job. College graduation in Pennsylvania was still more than a week away…
…but I was back in Vermont being introduced to my new co-workers. Oh, and my future husband…
Because our second wedding anniversary is tomorrow, we thought we’d take the opportunity to share with you a bit more about ourselves. Like how Chris relentlessly begged me for a date before I gave in and gave him a chance.
Well, maybe that’s not quite how it happened.
As fate would have it, Chris and I were colleagues. And though I duly noted his good looks and sense of humor on that first day, we remained simply friends and co-workers for more than a year.
As we became friends, we realized how much we had in common. I had fun watching Chris get jealous about my dates and boyfriends. And I always wondered what he was really like outside of our 8-to-5 friendship.
In the end, it was Chris who gave in first. After months of walking by my desk and flexing (I think it was a nervous habit) and making up reasons to talk to me, he finally asked me out.
You see, the Friday before, I told him about a date I had planned for Labor Day weekend going to a local fair (yes, that is what people in Vermont do). He asked me to bring him back a candy apple. As it turns out, I had such a bad time on that date that I easily remembered the candy apple task and promptly delivered it to Chris’ desk when we returned to the office.
He must have taken that as a good sign, because just days later he quietly asked me to have a casual drink after work. And the rest was history.
But it wasn’t easy going. Because we worked in such a small office, we decided to keep our increasingly-serious relationship a secret (gasp!). And not like a secret office romance you see in the movies. No, it was more like we didn’t talk to each other at work for fear of everyone seeing what we saw! We wondered many times if it was all worth the stress, but we forged on.
A year later, Chris got a new job and moved to Maine. And a few months later Chris proposed while we were celebrating our second New Year’s Eve in Quebec City. And then the rest really was history.
But more on that tomorrow. In the meantime, you are going to get to hear from Chris. That’s right, he is preparing his post which will include his version of how we met. We’ll see how his matches up…

Offce romance…Scandalous! Very cute story, Happy Anniversary! Oh and where did you go to school??

Hey Shannon,
Yes, very scandalous! I went to Elizabethtown College. I was actually wondering if we knew common people when you said that you went to a wedding in Lancaster!

I love this story, and I love hubby’s version. Isn’t it amazing all the different ways people are brought together?
