It’s sew easy

While I had my sewing machine out during Project Week to make these new white curtains for the guest bedroom, I decided to have a little quality time with some fun Amy Butler fabric.  When I saw this print in our local fabric shop, it provided instant inspiration.  A perfect match to the guest bedroom duvet cover, I knew this print was  meant to cover the existing fru-fru-cheapo decorative pillows (a bargain find for my first apartment a half-decade ago).  Here is the before:

Quickly I whipped up a plan for the pillow covers.  I decided to mimic a sham, keeping an opening in the back for easy stuffing.  I measured one square for the front, and measured a larger rectangle for the back.  For the back, I added about 5 inches to the size of the front square, then cut it in half.  The extra five inches allowed for seam allowances and folding on the exposed edges, and allowed some extra room for the puffiness of the pillow.  Here it is mid-process:

A few simple straight seams (let’s be real, these are clearly the only kind of seams I can handle at this point) and I had a new pillow cover.  Goodbye, ugly pillows.  Hello fresh, modern and soft pillow covers!

I think my sewing machine went into shock having two sewing projects in the same week.  That’s more action than it usually sees in a year.  Now, with the pillow covers done, the curtains hung and the plant still thriving in its seashell planter, we are getting closer and closer to seeing our new made-over guest bedroom!  Try to move back from the edge of your seat…
